At Georgetown University, the school of continuing studies will be embarking on uncharted territory next fall. The university will be adding a diversity masters program that will link diversity & inclusion with the human resources profession. Georgetown University would become the first collegiate institution to implement this field of study.
“We decided we wanted to create a program that would allow us to link HR business strategies with global developments,” said Christopher Metzler, associate dean in the human resources masters program.
The masters program will consist of three concentrations; strategic human capital management, international human resources management, and diversity studies. GU hopes that by adding this new program, it can better prepare its students to innovate & compete in a changing market.
“If you look at where diversity is as a discipline, you see people with jobs as diversity directors and chief diversity officers,” Metzler said. “These positions simply did not exist 10 years ago. We wanted to make sure that those in the field have both academic and practical expertise behind them.”
The masters Program, which begins next fall is scheduled to have nearly 25 students. Many of them he hopes are non-traditional students from the business community. Nevertheless, GU is taking pride in pioneering this new masters study program.
“[The United States] has been well behind the curve on diversity studies,” he said. “But the field is really evolving as an academic discipline, and the faculty we are looking at to lead this program are the ones who have been the laying the groundwork for this [as a discipline]."
