Although there is a strong push by many businesses, non-profits, and communities, there are some that feel threatened by inclusiveness. On Tuesday night, the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors voted to postpone a comprehensive county wide Diversity Initiative (CCDI) statement intended to stimulate economic growth and attract a varied work force to the County. This initiatives was supported by some of the counties businesses leaders as a way to prepare Fond du Lac County for a changing future.
"CCDI is about the community coming together to be proactive in our approach to talent attraction," Brenda Hicks-Sorensen, president of the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation said. "CCDI is about choosing the future for Fond du Lac County."
However, the county members were heavily opposed to the (CCDI) for fear that it would impeach their way of life. Furthermore, many county members expressed their displeasure with the county government regulating diversity issues, and to promote homo sexuality in the community.
"Where does it stop?" Expressed Fond du Lac resident Sharon Malchow, "Opening this door would be … inviting more problems than it would solve."
Other residents also felt that the (CCDI) would cause problems, "This is just a smokescreen. The goal is same-sex marriages," Resident Vernon Voigt said. "We don't want Fond du Lac to be another San Francisco or Sodom and Gomorrah."
Regardless of the feelings toward the the diversity initiative in Fond du Lac, the innitiative has been suspended indefinitely.
